The Sulamith Hanging Gardens

The botanical garden in the Almenland

In the middle of the nature park Almenland, the largest contiguous alpine pasture area in Europe, the Sichart family has created a unique 4,000 m² garden dream at 1,000 m above sea level. The garden is divided into several terraced themed gardens. There is an extraordinary botanical variety of trees (over 100 different ornamental trees) shrubs, medicinal herbs and many other rarities.

The oriental maiden name Sulamith, already mentioned in the Bible book Hohelied, is a synonym for natural beauty. Despite harsh climatic conditions and an altitude of 1,000m, many plants mentioned in the Bible and native to the Orient can be found in the hanging gardens of Sulamith.

Origin of the garden

My husband and I started some time ago to transform the stony slope into a visually beautiful garden. Where cows used to graze on the steep slope, there are now magnificent perennial beds. Afterwards we planted some rarities in our garden and later increased them successively. Some of them originally come from the Orient. Plants that are mentioned in the Bible can now be found in our garden at 1,000 m above sea level, in the middle of the Almenland Nature Park.

For more than 25 years I have been engaged in herbal medicine, I am fascinated by all the household remedies that have been used. Many of these old household remedies grow in our garden and during guided herbal tours I like to tell you about my herbal knowledge.

My husband loves the trees and has already planted 115 different ornamental trees in our garden. Over time, these natural separations have created theme gardens from the individual garden areas.

Biodiversity is very important to us. We pay great attention to natural diversity. As far as natural fertilization is concerned, we have only used organic horse manure enriched with microorganisms and our own organic compost right from the start.

I love to create something new, my head is full of ideas. Some ideas I try to implement every year, so our garden becomes more and more interesting. On guided tours I like to share my practical knowledge, which I have acquired over the last 25 years.

We are looking forward to your visit!
